Cachexia is a state characterized by loss of weight and weakness in the muscles. It is usually an indicator of a serious underlying malady such as cancer, AIDS or an autoimmune disorder. Drug addiction can also lead to cachexia. Patients suffering from cachexia do not usually respond well to treatment till the underlying cause is tackled.
